Irene Bengoechea is a visual artist, photographer, and scenographer whose practice explores memory, identity, and the passage of time as unstable processes continuously reconstructed from the present.

 

She uses the image as a space where remembrance, the body, and emotional experience can be reinterpreted and transformed.

​

Her work is grounded in experimental photographic processes, combining analogue photography, scanographies, and Polaroid self-portraits with manual interventions such as painting, collage, thread, and material alterations.

​

Through these slow, tactile gestures, the image is displaced from its original state, revealing how images, and identity itself, are fluid, fragmented, and constantly renegotiated.

Deeply interested in the materiality of the image, its texture, fragility, and presence, her practice extends photography toward installation and scenographic approaches, understanding the image as both object and constructed territory.

 

Through disguise, staging, and image manipulation, she investigates the self as a contemporary construction, shaped by fiction, desire, and memory.

Her projects create poetic and introspective spaces situated between personal memory and collective narratives, questioning what it means to remember, represent oneself, and appear in the present.
